I've always admired the way the arts can not only teach us more about the world around us, but also about ourselves. Film has been pivotal in shaping who I am since I was a kid, when my dad sat me down to watch Roots for the first time. It was then that I experienced firsthand the power film has in shaping the way we see and interact with the world.
When I was 16, I got cast in my first play at school. I was a very shy, socially-anxious person. But when I was onstage, I had the power to override those fight-or-flight feelings; it was as though I was given a superpower I had then only dreamt of. Suddenly, I could stand in front of a room with my head held high.
My experience as both an audience member and active participant in theatrical works has shaped me in innumerable ways. Film and theatre are incredibly powerful mediums, and if used well, can have a wonderful impact on the world around us.
When I was 16, I vowed to use my newfound love of acting to make a positive difference in the world. That's why I went on to found my own production company, Noveltea Films, with the express purpose of giving a voice to those who are often overlooked in media. I love to highlight unique intersections in people's identities: my first film was about being biracial, and my current film is about being both queer and Christian. Vital stories that are lived by so many people, but are rarely given the spotlight.
I truly believe there is no limit to the good that we can achieve as artists. I only hope that in my time, I can use my passion to collaborate with other artists to create works that will make the world a bit more empathetic and kind-- one story at a time.
With love, Audrey
